Workshop to help farmers reach bigger markets with products Striving to find profitable ways to keep farming? On Wednesday, November 29th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., a workshop for farmers will feature knowledge and connections needed to effectively sell to mid- and large-scale markets such as produce distributors, grocers, hospitals, schools, and restaurants. Held by Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, the training will focus on these topics: + Understanding current market opportunities + How to build a great relationship with your buyers + Food safety and profitability + Growing, packing and marketing panel discussion. Speakers will include Alan Henderson, CEO of C.L. Henderson Produce; Isaac Allen, Earth Fare; Diane Ducharme, North Carolina Cooperative Extension; and Kate Slattery, Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project. The workshop, to be held at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station in Fletcher, NC, is titled Cultivating Local: Expanding Market Opportunities for Higher Volume Farms. Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to sustaining farms and rural communities throughout western North Carolina and the Southern Appalachian mountains. The workshop is funded by the Southern Region Risk Management Education Center, with support from the Farm Prosperity Project, Southern SAWG, and North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
