From the porch
In this post election exhaling of breath as everyone sighs with relief that the election is at last over, it is good to see unity among the people. This is the incident that unites us. You are relaxing at home and the phone rings. You were expecting Aunt Betty to call. You pick up the phone. There is a moment of silence. "Hello" you say again. Then, a mechanical sounding voice says that this call is about Senator Snobnose. The voice begins to detail the horrendous acts of Sen. Snobnose. You realize it is another recorded voice from Political Land. Sen. Snobnose's opponent. Jedright Highbrow, has paid someone to make a recording and it is being sent to as many potential voters as the party can find phone numbers for. Highbrow's cronies have discovered that Snobnose visited a strip bar. "Is this the kind of person we want in Congress?" the mechanical voice righteously questions. However, you happen to know that a single slice of what happened is being reported and that the reason for the visit and what Sen. Snobnose did at the bar were conveniently left out of the recording. You have learned that Sen. Snobnose received a distressing call from a close neighbor that her underage daughter had gone to the bar and had said she was going to dance at amateur night. The mother pleaded with Snobnose to go with her to the bar and retrieve her daughter. Sen. Snobnose accompanied her to the bar, talked to the bar owner, informing him how much trouble he would be in if he allows the underage girl to dance and then he and the mother leave with the daughter. Well, now you know who to vote for - Sen. Snobnose instead of that "exaggerate the truth" Highbrow. Not so fast. The next night you get a call from a person stating that this call is about Jedright Highbrow. The call alleges that Highbrow has been involved in some shady financial dealings at the bank he runs. The call ends with the declaration that this call was made by supporters of Sen. Snobnose. Everyone I have talked to about the subject say this was the worst year they remember for political calls, both the volume and negative content. I haven't heard one person say they can't wait for the next election so that they can get more recorded political phone calls. Most people say they would be more willing to listen to a real, live person. At least they could then ask questions or respond to the caller. Does this united feeling against recorded political calls mean that we will live together in peace and harmony? I think not. The politicians are often the slowest learners when it comes to what displeases or pleases the public. Maybe if we voice our displeasure to those in public offices some will get the point. But in the heat of the political battle, I bet many will forget and will revert to their annoying political tactics.
