Head-on crash shuts down US 64
At least one person was injured in a violent head-on crash Monday night on US 64 West, near the Fires Creek Aztex station. The accident, which occurred around 8 p.m., involved an older Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight and a Ford pickup, pulling a small utilility trailer. Clay County Fire and Rescue units responded, finding one person trapped in the Oldsmobile. While rescuers from Clay and Cherokee counties set about cutting apart the car so the victim could be extracted - a process taking some two hours - fire units from Cherokee County helped by closing US 64 at Mission Road, and diverting traffic. Towns County, Ga., also sent crews to help. A helicopter from Memorial Mission Hospital was called and landed at Murphy Medical Center. Rescue units reported the road was reopened by 11 p.m. The wreck is under investigation. No other details were available at press time.
