Community In Schools to purchase equipment for new indoor rec facility A report was given to commissioners last week by Community In Schools Director Theresa Waldroup. Waldroup outlined for commissioners the continued service CIS provides to the children and families of Clay County. CIS works closely with all three local schools to fill gaps whenever needed, from providing eye exams and glasses to school supplies, tutoring and mentoring. Waldroup also announced that CIS will purchase all the exercise equipment for the fitness room at the new county indoor recreation building currently under construction. CIS has committed $10,000 to be used to purchase high-quality fitness equipment for the facility, she commented. The total bill for the equipment is $10,945. Commissioners voted to pay the remaining $945 so that all the equipment can be purchased. Waldroup said that a daughter of a CIS board member helped get the equipment, which retails for $14,293, at a substantial discount making it possible for all the equipment needed to be purchased. Other projects going forward thanks to grants received by CIS are the pedestrian bridge at Spike Buck Mound and paving of the walking trail at the Veteran's Park, Waldroup reported. Piers for the bridge are being poured and the four steel beams donated by the NC DOT will be placed when the piers have set up. In the Spring, CIS will again be working with Dr. Jane Eastman from WCU for another archeological dig near Spike Buck Mound. Waldroup added that hopefully students from Hayesville will be able to participate in one of Eastman's classes at WCU. Future plans also include a mobile display of the relics which were recovered during the first dig earlier this year. Waldroup said CIS hopes to use funds to do an actual exhibit that will make it possible to share what was found at Spike Buck with the general public. Since beginning ten years ago with $8,000, Waldroup said the CIS budget this year totals $222,461.84. State funding through grants and contracts total $28,139, with in-kind donations from the city and county totaling $29,630, the school system $21,578, and the Golden Leaf Foundation totaling $25,000.
This year, she added, CIS saw the largest amount ever donated from private individuals, churches and businesses at $25,658.93.
