Loss can be felt greater during holidays

DEAR AMERICAN GIRL: Ever since my grandpa died, the holidays haven't been the same. How can I enjoy the holidays without him? - Holiday Blues

The holidays won't be the same without your grandpa - they can't be. But you should keep in mind that he would have wanted you to enjoy them anyway. If traditions make you sad, talk to your family. Maybe they're feeling sad, too. It might help everyone to share happy memories and reminisce about your grandpa. It might also help you feel less alone and enjoy your holidays more.

DEAR AMERICAN GIRL: My good friend is a brag box. Whenever I tell her something, she has to tell me something even better. It's like I have plain vanilla ice cream and she has a banana split. I've told her how I feel, but she keeps on bragging. - Bragged Out

If you've talked with your friend and she hasn't tried to change, you have a choice to make. You can accept that she has an irritating habit, and learn to tune her bragging out. Or, next time she brags, simply say, "It sounds like you're really proud of that," then quickly change the subject. If she still continues to brag, you can spend time with other friends who are willing to share the spotlight with you.
