Three Hayesville football players have been named to the 2006 Smoky Mountain Conference All-Conference football team. Randy Nichols, Jonathan Shively and Blake Mosteller were chosen by the coaches within the conference.

And while Hayesville's second-place finish in the conference was seemingly overlooked in the overall makeup of the squad, the Yellow Jackets who were picked were all solid choices.

"We had 10 nominations," said Head Football Coach Neil Setzer on Monday, "Eight by virtue of four conference wins and everyone in the conference gets two. We only placed three people on the team, but there are a lot of variables."

In a way, you could say Hayesville actually placed four on the All-Conference squad. Randy Nichols, the standout senior on the Yellow Jacket line, was named an All-Conference offensive lineman and defensive lineman.

Nichols led all Jacket defensemen during the season, making 57 tackles and assisting on 34 more. He had one sack and two fumble recoveries.

Hayesville offensive spark-plug Jonathan Shively was chosen the team's quarterback. Shively got an honorable mention at the punter position.

And senior Blake Mosteller, Shively's weapon of choice on pass plays, was named wide receiver. He also garnered an honorable mention as a defensive back.

Other Hayesville players on the honorable mention list were: Barrett Woody at running back and linebacker; Matthew Mixon at running back; Nick Cain at linebacker; and Cory Cox at defensive back.

Cain was the number-two tackler for Hayesville this season, with 50 tackles and an astounding 53 assists. Woody logged 19 tackles with 10 assists.

By contrast, Murphy, a team that finished the season tied with Hayesville and who suffered a major upset at the hands of the Yellow Jackets, placed six players on the All-Conference team. Swain, another team that finished tied with Hayesville, placed four.

Rosman, who finished in fifth place with a loss to Hayesville in the regular season, also placed four.

But for Setzer, the way the All-Conference balloting shook out pales compared to the successes of the football season.

"The most important thing is how our team fought back through the season and finished second. I'm glad that these kids are responsible for putting our team in the athletic top of the Smoky

Mountain Conference. And now it's up to the team that follows them to stay there," said Setzer.
