A Christmas Carol: behind the scenes The Licklog Players are currently rehearsing for Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. There have been many interpretations of this seasonal favorite over the years, but none quite compares to the original time honored story of miserly, crusty Ebenezer Scrooge and his personal journey toward recapturing his Christmas spirit. David Layfield, who counts this as his third director's challenge this year, is putting together a classic retelling of Dickens's tale. The value of the director and actors is paramount to the audience. Being able to relay the sights, sounds, and nuances of days gone by is an art form that takes skill, talent, timing and a lot of extra help behind the scenes. What the audience sees on the stage while sitting comfortably in their seats is the end result of many hours of work by not only the actors and the director, but also a myriad of extra hands that have taken time out of their busy schedules to sew put together costumes, build sets, manage props, manage cues and arrange the lighting and sound that accompanies each scene change. Each stitch that is sewn, each nail that is hammered - all contribute to the culmination of a performance that tells a story and entertains. The behind the scenes work will go on throughout the play. The people behind the scenes may not take a bow when the curtain falls, but their results are seen through the performers on the stage. From the time the auditions take place and the tickets go on sale to the volunteer coordinator who brings together the needed ushers and concession helpers, to the final applause at the draw of the curtain, hours upon hours are spent by dozens of others who remain behind the scenes working together to make each and every performance a wonderful one. A Christmas Carol opens December 14 and runs through the 17. Ticket prices are $13 for adults and $8 for students. The box office opens December 4.
