Water line extension OK’d by board The Clay County Water and Sewer Board approved the water line extension plans submitted by the new assisted living facility under construction on Old Highway 64 at their meeting Thursday. The plans must be approved by the board before they can be submitted to the state for the necessary permit. The extension of the water line is necessary for the facility to tap into the county’s water supply. Water and Sewer Department Director Layton Schuh said that sewer lines are readily available to the facility for hooking onto the county for sewage service, therefore, no request is necessary for the sewer line. The board approved the request as presented. County Manager Paul Leek made a recommendation to the board asking that they give the remaining three Water and Sewer Advisory Board members the job of coming up with a list of names as possible replacements for the two members who have resigned from the advisory board. Ed Ashe and Hub Cheeks are the two individuals that will be replaced. The advisory boards’ next meeting is scheduled for January 29. Leek’s recommendation was approved. Schuh also informed the board that he will meet with TVA on Wednesday at 11 a.m. to discuss water supply issues. Schuh said he hopes to gain information as to the possibility of additional deep wells for the county to use for water supply for the water treatment plant. Also, Schuh said he will be asking TVA officials about receiving an allocation for surface water from Lake Chatuge in the future to help build capacity at the water treatment plant.
According to County Manager Leek and Schuh, the current treatment facility has the capacity to treat approximately 500,000 to 600,000 gallons of water a day. The two deep wells that are currently the only sources of water for the plant only have the ability to produce 350,000 gallons a day.
