Jacket wrestlers travel to Franklin for meet
While the varsity and junior varsity squads lost by just a few team points to much bigger Franklin teams, the junior varsity was able to score a win against Swain Middle School. In varsity action, Hayesville’s Sam Lusty drew six team points in a forfeit in the 112-pound class. Tyler Marcoux, in the 119-pound class, pinned his opponent in just 49 seconds to pick up six more team points. Justin Guffey, in the 125- pound class, scored a pin after just over a minute, while Kyle Lickteig battled for the entire 6- minute match before scoring an 11-7 decision over his Franklin opponent. Hayesville’s Tim Shaffer had his hands full in the 140- pound class, but came out the victor in a 10-9 match that saw his opponent use not one, but three illegal holds. After being warned by the referee each time, Shaffer’s opponent was finally disqualified from the match and Franklin was assessed a 2-point team penalty for misconduct for their wrestler’s behavior.
In an exhibition match, Hayesville’s Tyler Benson pinned his Franklin opponent after 2:34. No team points are awarded for exhibition matches. The final team score was Hayesville 33, Franklin 37. Hayesville Middle School wrestlers had a tougher time with Franklin. Brett McCray, in the 83- pound class, drew a forfeit, and 5 team points for the Yellow Jackets. Adam Thurmond pinned his opponent in the 103-pound weight class. And Jaime Worley, wrestling in the 112- pound class, battled his way to a 21-8 major decision that added four points to the Hayesville team score. In the 125-pound class, Tyler Dockery scored a pin 2 minutes and 47 seconds into his match, while Dakota Lyvers took just 30 seconds to pin his opponent in the 135-pound weight class.
Taylor Woody rounded out the HMS scoring, by pinning his opponent in the 189-pound class at the 3-minute mark. When the dust had settled, Franklin had pulled out a 42-37 win over Hayesville Middle School. But the junior varsity wrestlers rebounded against a more-evenly matched Swain County squad. Once again, Brett McCray led the scoring, drawing another forfeit in the 83-pound class and another 6 team points for the Jackets. James McDowell also drew a forfeit in the 103-pound class. Jaime Worley got down to business quickly in the 119- pound class, pinning his Swain County opponent in 50 seconds, chalking up another 6 team points for Hayesville.
In the 135-pound class, Dakota Lyvers pinned his Swain opponent at the 1:20 mark. And Ryan Hadas pinned his opponent in the 160-pound class after 2 minutes and 16 seconds. Wrestling in the 250-pound class, Taylor Woody managed to pin his Swain County opponent after 2 minutes and 23 seconds.
The junior varsity wrestlers left Franklin with a 42-24 team victory over Swain County.
