From the porch
Did the world go bonkers while we were off?
Dwight Otwell

I am writing this column before Christmas because our newspaper annually takes the week between Christmas and New Year off.

We don’t publish for that one week. The computer keyboards get a rest from busy fingers. Telephone calls are intercepted by an answering machine and the office remains as quiet as a Christmas mouse.

By missing an entire week, it’s no telling what events will have occurred in our region. We may have missed some momentous stories. Perhaps, in our absence,

Andrews succeeded from Cherokee County. Maybe Robbinsville acquired a professional Roller Derby team. (Do they still have Roller Derby?) It could be that Clay County has decided to lease its old courthouse on the square to the U.S. military for an anti-terrorist training headquarters. No telling what sights the residents of Hayesville may see around the courthouse in the future.

On the national level, maybe, while we were filling ourselves with holiday cheer, President George Bush left his wife and ran away to Mexico with new liberal Speaker of the House Nancy Polosi.

Perhaps the big news is that no celebrities have either married or divorced. Maybe even bigger news is that celebrities married or divorced and no one cared - not even the national news media.

Anyway, I am glad for the week off and I’m thankful I have a job.

Let’s pray that the positive news this year will far outweigh the negative.

We at the Sentinel wish you all a very blessed and prosperous 2007.
