HHS women are state champions — again

The 2006 State Championship races were held at Tanglewood Park on Saturday, November 4th. The Hayesville women’s Cross Country team ran to their 4th consecutive State Championship, against the top sixteen teams in the state.

The women’s team was lead by the All-State race of Senior Stella Snowden. Stella finished 5th overall for her third consecutive All-State honor.

The Ladyjackets were able to beat out the second place team by just three points.

Heather Richbourg, Holly Runstrom, Nancy Kelly and Nichole Brown each ran their best races of the year to give the Hayesville team the NCHSAA State Championship.

The other runners for HHS who ran in the race were: Ginger Buchanan and Kayla Mitchell, each having exceptional races in the State meet. Only the top seven runners for a team can compete in the Championship races.

Out of the 92 schools in the 1A category, the women’s team from Hayesville were ranked number one the entire year in the State coaches poll and lived up to that ranking in the State meet.

This year’s team earned many honors, winning thirteen of their fifteen races.

They were the Smoky Mountain Conference Champions for the 4th straight year and also the West Region Champions for the 4th straight year.

Congratulations on an exceptional season. Your school and community are very proud of your accomplishments.
