TCCC has Machining Technology Degree Tri-County Community College is proud to announce the addition of a Machining Technology degree to its curriculum.
This two-year program AM leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Machining Technology. The Machining Technology curriculum is designed to develop skills in the theory and safe use of hand tools, power machinery, computerized equipment, and sophisticated precision inspection instruments. Students will learn to interpret blueprints, set up manual and CNC machines, perform basic and advanced machining operations, and make decisions to ensure that work quality is maintained. Employment opportunities for machining technicians exist in manufacturing industries, public institutions, governmental agencies, and in a wide range of specialty machining job shops. Many local companies are currently hiring trained machinists. The program's instructor is Phil Jones. Jones earned an Associate in Science degree from Young Harris College, then finished at North Georgia Tech in Machine Tool and Die. He worked at Southwire in Carrollton, Ga., for 11 years as a machinist and supervisor then spent 21 years as owner and machinist at J&J Tool and Die. He has been working as an instructor in TCCC's machinist training program in the Continuing Education department since August 2005. Jones is enrolled in the Engineering Technology program at WCU, where he recently made the dean's list. "I'm honored to be able to help pass along a craft that I have enjoyed for over 30 years and that this area needs so desperately," said Jones. Normally, new students will enter the program in the fall but an exception will be made for the first class to begin in January. Classes scheduled for Spring 2007 are ACA 111 - College Student Success; BPR 111 - Blueprint Reading; ENG 111 - Expository Writing; MAC 111 - Machining Technology I; MAC 114 - Intro to Metrology; and MEC 111 - Machine Processes.
