George Edward Penland Clay County native, WW II veteran, broadcast engineer George Edward Penland, 86, of Hayesville died Saturday (December 30, 2006) in North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell, GA as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a native of Clay County, living in the Shooting Creek Community most of his life. He was the son of the late Claude S. and Bessie Bell Penland. George was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Army in the African, Sicily, and European Campaigns as a Sergeant in the 2nd Armored Division, where he served with distinction and was a recipient of the Bronze Star with 3V2 forValor. Mr. Penland retired after 30 years of service as a broadcast engineer with WSB-TV of the Cox Broadcasting Corporation of Atlanta, GA. He was an active farmer in the Shooting Creek Community for the last 24 years. He was an avid reader, livestock producer, and gardener. As health permitted, he attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church, where he was recognized as a quiet man of faith. He was preceded in death by a sister, Cordie Myers and two brothers, Charlie Oscar and William Webster Penland. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Christine Ledford Penland; a daughter, Rebecca Penland Vittur and husband, Wilson E. Vittur of Henderson, KY; a son, Barry E. Penland and wife, Shari E. Penland of Apex, NC; three sisters, Vallie Buchanan and Margaret Sue Dear both of Akron, OH, and Janice Hopkins of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Wiley Arch Penland of Martinez, GA and Paul Penland of Buford, GA; and nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one step-great grandson. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2007) in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Revs. Terry Davenport and Jimmy Rogers officiating. Interment was in the Laurel Hill Memory Gardens with military graveside rites conducted by the Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison-Bristol), American Legion Post 96, DAV Chapter 73, and VFW Post 10222. Pallbearers were his six grandsons, Wilson E. Vittur Jr., Brenton E. Penland, Daniel A. Penland, George W. Vittur, William J. Penland, and Dustin K. Vittur. The family received friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville. Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville is in charge of all arrangements.
