Yellow Jackets down Murphy on the mat
Junior Varsity takes a fall from Bulldogs, Towns County

Hayesville High School wrestlers came out the victors Friday, Jan. 5, when they took part in a Tri-Meet against Murphy High and Towns County High.

The Yellow Jackets traveled to Murphy, where they first met the Bulldogs on the mat and took team honors, 48 points to 30.

In that Smoky Mountain Conference matchup, Sam Lusty, in the 112-pound weight class, took just one minute to pin his Bulldog opponent. In the 140-pound class, Tim Shaffer earned 6 team points by pinning his opponent in just under 6 minutes. Kyle Licktieg pinned his opponent in the 145-pound class in a little more than a minute. Kevin McCreary pinned his opponent at 3:36 in the 152-pound class. In the 160- pound weight class, B.J. Struchko earned 6 team points for pinning his opponent in 5:08, and Tommy Kelly was declared the winner in a 12-0 major decision that earned 4 team points.

Tyler Marcoux (119 pounds), Justin Guffey (125 pounds) and Brennon Baker (135 pounds) each earned 6 team points by forfeits.

HHS vs. Towns Co.

After beating the Bulldogs, the Yellow Jacket Varsity did battle with the Indians of Towns County. When the smoke cleared, Hayesville had another notch in their belts, beating the Indians, 37-30.

Victorious Yellow Jackets included: Justin Guffey, who was declared the winner in a 12-2 major decision, earning 4 team points in the 125- pound weight class; Ricky Narum, who pinned his opponent in the 130-pound class in just a minute and a half; Kevin McCreary, who pinned his opponent in the 152-pound class; B.J. Struchko, who hung on for a 9-8 decision in the 160-pound class that earned 3 team points; and Donovan Byers, who battled his way to a pin in the 275-pound weight class.

Sam Lusty (112 pounds) and D.J. Anderson (215 pounds) both earned forfeits and 6 team points each.

HMS vs. Murphy

The Hayesville Middle School squad had a much tougher time at the tri-meet than did their high school counterparts. Despite some fine individual performances, the JV Jackets lost, 42-36, to Murphy.

Jamie Worley, wrestling in the 112-pound class, started Hayesville scoring, pinning his opponent in just 25 seconds. Matthew Conley also needed less than a minute to pin his Bulldog opponent in the 119-pound bracket. Timmy Kelly, in the 130-pound class, earned 6 team points by pinning his opponent. Ryan Hadas wasted no time in the 152-pound class, pinning his opponent in just 11 seconds - the fastest pin of the entire meet. And in the 250-pound weight class, Taylor Woody pinned his opponent in just over 2 minutes.

Dakota Lyvers drew a forfeit in the 135- pound class and earned 6 team points as well.

HMS vs. Towns Co.

The Indians of Towns County, Ga., gave the JV Jackets more than they could handle. Six Jackets wrestled in the match and all six lost. The Indians whipped the JV Jackets 42-30.

Brett McCray (83 pounds), Tyler Payne (93 pounds), Matthew Conley (125 pounds), Timmy Kelly (135 pounds) and Dakota Lyvers (140 pounds) all drew forfeits and 6 points each.

Mid-season statistics

Some Hayesville High School wrestlers are posting impressive numbers. A look at victories versus losses shows some Jackets are very successful on the mat.

Sam Lusty, in the 112-pound weight class, has a 6-1 record, winning 86 percent of the time. Justin Guffey, 119 pounds, has built a 20-4 record for an 83 percentage. Tyler Marcoux, also at 112 pounds, has an 18-6 record and a 75 percentage. In the 152-pound class, Kevin McCreary also has earned an 18-6 record and a 75 percentage.

They are followed by Tim Shaffer (135 pounds) at 16-7 (70 percent); D.J. Anderson (215 pounds) at 9-4 (69 percent); B.J. Struchko (160 pounds) at 11-7 (61 percent); Tyler Benson (215 pounds) at 7-5 (58 percent); and Kyle Licktieg (140 pounds) at 12-9 (57 percent).

Other Jackets had records of 50 percent or below.
