A Place Remembered

In the late 1940s, my parents, Homer and Nettie Gibby, moved with their five children to the Elf Community just five miles east of Hayesville, NC. Daddy was a radio and TV repairman and a shop where he could work was constructed off Smart Road just beyond the house.

For over 30 years, Dad and Mom provided a much needed service to the Community. Many people still remember the old shop. From far and wide folks brought their TVs to be repaired or bought new TVs from Dad.

As a little girl I remember playing in and around the old shop as Daddy and Momma worked. It was a safe and secure world back then. Daddy always had time to stop and listen to my childish problems. He always had time for the folks that came to his shop. Many bought their TVs on credit because money was tight. Dad always extended a helping hand when the need arose.

Daddy died in 1979 and the old shop remained standing for another 27 years. Many of the TV tubes and parts remained in the building during this time. Due to a reluctance to see this part of our history gone, my brothers, sisters and I did not want to tear down this place that held so many memories.

Weather and time proved to be the victor, however, and last fall the old shop was torn down. The building had stood as a landmark in Clay County for over 50 years. We cleaned out the tubes, gave away the gauges and watched as a trackhoe brought the old shop down.

Every time I pass the place where the shop once stood, a part of me yearns for that time in my life when I was young, life was secure and Daddy was there.

Memories are all that remain.
THE SHOP
For so many years
It stood
A symbol of hard work,
Laughter and tears.
With Daddy's mind
And Mama's will
It provided
Shelter, food and love
enough to fill
a child's need.
This humble place
grew
A family
strong, united and secure.
It's gone now
the timbers, roof and floor
The memories remain
We are the proof
that it existed.
