It's said that "you win some and you lose some." And the adage proved mostly true when the Hayesville High School wrestling team took on teams from Robbinsville and Cherokee last week.

Hayesville wrestlers traveled to Robbinsville on Thursday, Jan. 25 to do battle with the Black Knights. Robbinsville took the Yellow Jacket Varsity handily, but had a much different result against the JV squad.

The Yellow Jackets took just three Smoky Mountain Conference matches against Robbinsville High, picking up just 16 team points to the Black Knights' 61.

Winners against Robbinsville were: Justin Guffey, wrestling in the 125-pound weight class, who held on for an 11-2 decision worth 4 team points; Kyle Licktieg, who scored a pin against his opponent in the 135-pound class; and Donovan Byers, in the 275- pound class, who pinned his Robbinsville opponent in just under 2 minutes.

HMS vs. Robbinsville Middle

The Yellow Jackets of Hayesville Middle school also faced a tough fight from Robbinsville, but held on for a 42-30 team victory. HMS winners were: Tyler Dockery, at 125 pounds, who pinned his opponent in just 15 seconds; Dakota Lyvers, in the 135- pound weight class, who scored a pin in 35 seconds; Ryan Hadas, wrestling in the 152- pound class, who scored a pin and 6 team points; and Taylor Woody, who pinned his opponent in the 189-pound class in just 36 seconds.

HHS VS Cherokee

The Cherokee Braves came to Hayesville on Tuesday, Jan. 23 for a meet at Hayesville High. They left with two losses in the team points column, falling to the Yellow Jacket Varsity and Junior Varsity.

The Jackets extracted a 42- 34 team win against Cherokee, on the strength of a broad-based attack. Winning wrestlers included: Justin Guffey, who hung on for a 5-2 decision in the 125-pound weight class; Kyle Licktieg, who fought his way to a pin in the 135-pound class; Kevin McCreary, who pinned his 152-pound-class opponent in 1:26; B.J. Struchko, who scored a pin in the 160-pound weight class; Tommy Kelly, wrestling in the 171-pound weight class, who pinned his opponent after 3:35; and Donovan Byers, who battled to a 7-6 decision worth 3 team points.
