Murphy High students to direct "6X5" at Peacock Playhouse
The drama program has produced some really insightful directors and I'm so glad that they have a chance for more people to see their work," said Laurel Adams, Thespian Troupe Director and drama teacher at Murphy High School (MHS). Adams continued, "We became a member of the International Thespian Society last year and are the only troupe in Western North Carolina. The students competed last year in the State Festival and found out they could hold their own against much larger schools, so they were eager to have the same experience again." This year the MHS project will have five student directors doing six short one-act plays, so the show is called "6X5." Each show must fall under the 30-minute time restrictions of the Festival and the audience will again this year vote for their favorite; the winner will go to State. The plays are a mixture of comedy and drama, and there will even be two Shakespearean sonnets as seen from a contemporary perspective, so there's something for everyone. Each director selected his/her own play, cast it and is in rehearsal in a rotating schedule after school; some directors are also acting; some actors are doing multiple roles. The directors are required to design their backdrops, paint them, decide on their lighting needs and recruit their own stage managers so it is an entire theatrical experience. Veterans Patience Owl, Chelsie McRae, Cody Edmondson, Jeffery King and Sammi Major are the five directors and their casts include Roarke Arrowood, Cory Cheeks, Brittney Dockery, Sam Gampel, Chelsea Smith, Morgan Smith, Stephen Anderson, Brandon Douthit, Abe Ramadan, James Lapham, Arielle Vertuoso and Eric Markland. They are ably assisted by Stage Managers, Erika Lovingood, Moriah Marlowe and Luke Johnson. Performances are at the Peacock Playhouse in Hayesville on February 15 at 7 p.m., February 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. and February 18 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at The Daily Grind in Murphy or at the door when you arrive. The price is $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.
Come and cheer us on. Your attendance will help send us to the State Festival in Winston-Salem!
