By Bob Williams Sentinel writer

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: A Hayesville Middle School wrestler prepares to take on a Rosman wrestler at the Smoky Mountain Conference Tournament in Murphy; Donovan Byers works to get his opponent rolled over prior to a first-round pin; Jaime Worley is caught in mid-air as he switches sides to get position; and Tyler Dockery waits for the referee to givbe himthe signal that he pinned his Hiwassee Dam opponent.
They knew it wouldn't be easy. And it wasn't.

But that didn't stop Hayesville High School and Middle School wrestlers from winning some pretty big medals at the Smoky Mountain Conference Wrestling tournament last weekend in Murphy.

Eight teams participated; and Hayesville finished with a very respectable fourth-place finish among high schools and third in the middle school bracket.

But the really big news came at the individual level.

It had been a tough year for the Yellow Jackets going into the season. Two promising wrestlers opted out this year due to previous injuries. The fortunes of both the high school and middle school squads were up-and-down all season.

But as they say, timing is everything. And the young men of the Hayesville Wrestling Team showed they got rhythm.

On the varsity, Tim Shaffer was the man among men, battling his way to a SMC Championship in the 135- pound weight class. He earns a slot on the 2007 All-SMC Wrestling Team. Four of Shaffer's teammates took second place honors at the Murphy tournament.

Tyler Marcoux took second in the 112-pound weight class; Justin Guffey wrestled to a second place medal in the 125- pound class; Kyle Licktieg, fighting a possible broken hand as well as his opponents, shone in a second-place finish in the 140-pound weight class; and Kevin McCreary earned a second place medal in the 152- pound weight class.

During the regular season, Guffey (27-8), Shaffer (21-7), Lickteig (20-12) and McCreary (26-10) had the best records for the Yellow Jackets.

Sam Lusty (103 pounds), B.J. Struchko (160 pounds) and Donovan Byers (285 pounds) earned bronze medals for thirdplace finishes in their respective weight classes.

Other wrestlers taking part in the tournament were Ricky Narum (130 pounds), Tommy Kelly (171 pounds) and Tyler Benson (215 pounds). Benson was injured in the second round when he was thrown by a Cherokee wrestler and took a hard landing. He was unable to continue.

Team scores for the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament were:

#Robbinsville - 194

#Rosman - 136 #Swain - 129 #Hayesville - 117 #Murphy - 96 #Cherokee - 69

#Hiwassee Dam - 38

#Andrews - 22

HayesvilleMiddle School wrestlers also shone in the conference tournament.

Four team members made it through the competition without a single loss, giving them championship medals: Jamie Worley was undefeated in the 112-pound class; Tyler Dockery was unbeaten in the 130-pound weight class; Dakota Lyvers was first in the 135-pound class; and Taylor Woody battled his way to top honors in the 189-pound weight class

It should be noted that Worley and Lyvers were both undefeated for the entire season; Worley with a 15-0 record and Lyvers at 16-0. Taylor Woody came close at 15-1 for the regular season.

Taylor Payne (83 pounds) took second place in his division and Ryan Hadas placed third in the 152-pound weight class.
