With the regular season winding down with Hayesville's last regular game that was played with Rosman as the Sentinel went to press on Tuesday, there is high expectation that the Jacket boys could finish near the top of the conference.

The Jacket boys split their last two games with a decisive win over Murphy in a homegame earlier last week, but a disappointing loss to Robbinsville on a cold snowy evening at Robbinsville prevented the Jackets from being the front runner in the conference.

In the Murphy game, the Jacket seniors got a lot of play and performed well; however it was the outside shooting that really put the hurt on the Bulldogs.

Cory Cox pumped in four three-pointers, a field goal and five free throws for 19 points as the Jackets went on to win 53 to 44 against Murphy. Ricky Davis also had a great game pulling down rebounds and shooting six baskets against a physical Murphy team.

Trevor Staton, Chase Phillips, Brendon Gray, Tyler Vaughn, Jared Ashe, Michael Glatthar and Ian McLamb also racked up a few points to make it a truly team effort, although at times it seemed like there was a plate glass across the Jacket hoop. Hayesville got off numerous shots, some of which rolled around the basket and fell out or were just short.

On Friday, the Robbinsville Black Knights upset Hayesville boys. The jackets have only lost two conference game heading into their final game with Rosman, over there. Hayesville boys beat Rosman quite handily in Hayesville.

The Hayesville girls came up against a fast Murphy team, but managed to hold their own throughout most of the game. However, the Lady Bulldogs' speed and aggressive play enabled them to defeat the Lady Jackets by 11 points. The Lady Jackets also fell to Robbinsville.

The Smoky Mountain Tournament is scheduled to be played at Bryson City.
