He's "The Cat in the Hat!"
By Carla Gwaltney Owens Sentinel writer

Green Eggs and Ham. The Cat in the Hat. Thing One and Thing Two. Where were they? You'd have found them all if you would've stopped by our grand celebration at Elementary School Drive this past Friday.

And, if you were lucky enough to be one of the adults on hand for the special day long celebration held on Friday in honor of Dr. Seuss and the 50th birthday of his book, Cat in the Hat, you would have felt, if only for a brief moment, like you were back in elementary school and the world could be whatever you could imagine it to be - a place where you eat green eggs and play with blue haired "things" while a cat wearing a big striped hat jumps out of a gigantic birthday cake!

Students at Hayesville Elementary School certainly celebrated the 10th Annual Read Across America in style on Friday. They began the day with a complimentary breakfast of Green Eggs and Ham (the eggs were really green!) before spending the entire day celebrating the joys of reading. From reading with their teachers to being read to by community volunteers like North Carolina Senator John Snow and members of the Clay County Board of Education, Hayesville Elementary School students had a very exciting day on Friday.

Hat greets the Hayesville Elementary classes;
The highlight of the day came at an assembly held in the auditorium, where an actual scarecrow read students a story. The scarecrow read the book Scarecrow Pete, a story about a boy who finds exciting adventures when he begins reading books with the scarecrow in his garden.

And if having a scarecrow read you a story isn't enough, how about singing Happy Birthday to The Cat in the Hat and having the Cat actually jump out of the cake! Students (and teachers) exploded into laughter as the Cat in the Hat was joined by Thing One and Thing Two and shared in a few antics familiar to all who know and love the Cat in the Hat.

The Hayesville Elementary School administration, faculty and staff, along with the help of many volunteer readers from the community, made this year's "Read Across America" celebration one students at Hayesville Elementary School will not soon forget.
