Tusquittee Ranger District announces areas to be burned in coming weeks

The Tusquitee Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service announces that several prescribed burns will be conducted in Clay County in the coming weeks.

Areas planned to be burned are the Shortoff Knob/Leatherwood area in Fires Creek (1,604 acres); Hurricane Creek (107 acres) off of Nelson Ridge Road; Chestnut Branch (110 acres) located off of Barnett Creek Road; and the Eller Seep (6 acres) located off of Highway 175 south of Jackrabbit Campground.

These areas are planned for burning to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and to restore habitat for special plant communities. Burning will take place as soon as weather conditions are favorable, sometime over the next several weeks, through early May. This notice is being given so that forest visitors and local residents will be aware of these planned burns.

The U.S. Forest Service urges forest users who frequent these particular areas to be aware of these planned burns and to avoid being in these areas while the burns are being conducted.

For further information, please contact the U.S. Forest Service office in Murphy at 837-5152 for more information.
