American Cancer Society Relay for Life

Art Association Classes

The Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association (BRMAA) is offering several new classes this month. Beginning Knitting taught by Melody Little will be held on Tuesdays, March 13 & 20 from 10 a.m. - 12 Noon and also on Tuesdays, March 27 & April 3 (same times) for those who can't make the first class; Felted Bags, also taught by Ms. Little, will be on Thursdays, March 15, 22 & 29. A Kudzu Basket & Wreath Workshop with Regina Hines will be held Saturday, March 17 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Gold Wire Wrap Jewelry with Bobbi Umbach will be on Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Watercolor Primer (watercolors for beginners) w/Ken Umbach will be on Wednesdays, March 21, 28 and April 4 & 11 from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m., and finally, Kaleidoscopes: A Journey into the Universe w/Scott Cole, will be a workshop held on Saturday, March 31.

The Arts Association also has several ongoing classes that can be joined at any time: Line Dancing Monday evenings w/Sandy Schubert and Handbuilding Clay for Adults w/Lynn Dwyer on Fridays from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Adult Oils on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. changes instructors each 6 weeks. BRMAA also offers Piano lessons with Neila Pace on Tuesdays and Beginning Guitar with Rachel Claire (flexible schedules). Clay County Extension Service: Spring Gardening!

When do I plant my garden? What do I plant? What things can I expect throughout the gardening season? Do any of these questions come to your mind when Spring rolls around? The Cooperative Extension Service will be holding a "Vegetable Gardening" session on Wednesday, April 11, at 12 Noon at the Clay County Community Services Building. Empty Bowl Event at John C. Campbell

The John C. Campbell Folk School will be hosting an "Empty Bowl Event" on Saturday, March 31, 2007. The cost of the tickets are $25.00 per person. This will include soup, salad, dessert, and drink, and you will go home with the bowl you were served your soup in. The bowls have been handmade by local potters and folk school students who have donated their talents.

Enchanted Valley Squares

The Enchanted Valley Squares hold their square dances in the Towns County Elementary School cafeteria. Dances are from 7:30 - 10:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Fridays. Free Diabetes classes offered at Library

Every Wednesday between 4 and 7 p.m., diabetes instruction is available free of charge at the Moss Library in Hayesville. The emphasis will be on understanding what diabetes is and how to do carbohydrate counting. Bring your logbooks, questions, and meters with you, Family members are also welcome.

Free WRAP classes

Free weekly WRAP classes are being offered every Tuesday from 4 - 6 p.m. in Clay County at the Hayesville Office of Murphy Counseling (the old Smoky Mountain Center). Wellness Recovery Action Planning, i.e. WRAP, is a 10-week course that teaches you an approach for managing mental health and/or substance abuse symptoms that are interfering with your life. WRAP can provide you with HOPE that you can recover and reach for your goals! Certified facilitators are employees of Meridian Behavioral Health Services and have reached a place in their own recovery to offer hope, education, and support to others. Classes are free and you can begin at any time. Come join us as we explore proven ways to regain our wellness. There is HOPE for a better life! Friends of NRA to hold dinner, auction

Friends of the NRA will hold a dinner and auction on Saturday, March 31, at the National Guard Armory in Murphy. The event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20; all net proceeds benefit youth education, range development, conservation efforts and other qualified educational programs. Hidden Treasures Thrift Shop

Come to the spring opening of the Hidden Treasures Trift Shop in its new location across from Moss Memorial Library on Saturday, March 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Your donations of gently used household items are appreciated. Licklog Players

Edie Kleinpeter is back once again to direct On Golden Pond, the warm and wonderful love story of two aging retirees who are returning to their summer home for the 44th year. Performance dates for this show will be March 30 - April 1 and April 6 - 8. For information call the Licklog office, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Licklog Players also welcomes individuals interested in participating in the backstage portion of the production such as set building, set painting, costuming, lighting and sound, as well as people to help man the lobby on opening nights as ushers, concessionaires and raffle ticket takers. We are also interested in anyone out there who has any knowledge of lighting and sound who would be interested in helping us out during productions. Plants For Sale

Place orders now for apple trees, blackberry vines, blueberry bushes, grape vines, raspberry plants, and strawberry plants. Orders can be placed now through mid- March. Save Our Hemlocks

Moss Memorial Library will host Dr. Paul Arnold, Young Harris College Professor of Biology on Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m. to discuss saving endangered hemlock trees. For further information call 828-389-8401.

VFW

VFW Post 6812 will serve its Quarterly Dinner at the Senior Center at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, March 22. The post will furnish the meat, potatoes, gravy, rolls and drinks. Covered dishes are welcomed. All members and guests are invited. All active military members home on leave, bring your families and loved ones and join us for a wonderful meal.

TCCC Foundation Plans Golf Tournament

The Tri-County Community College Foundation will hold its first Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 21 at The Ridges Country Club in Hayesville. The four-man, captain's choice format tournament is open to golfers of all levels. The total payout is $1,600 for first gross and first net. A variety of other contests and prizes will also be held including hole-inone, closest to the pin women and men, longest drive women and men, and a putting contest. Door prizes, raffles and mulligans will also be available. The cost is $60 per person and includes greens and cart fees as well as a practice round on Friday for only a $20 cart fee. Event and hole sponsorships are also available to individuals andbusinesses.Proceeds from the tournament will go to support the Tri- County Community College Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the College by providing resources and acting as a catalyst with the community. Foundation projects include scholarships, college and community events, financial assistance to student organizations, college facilities improvements, fundraising for the Fire and Rescue Training Center, and a planned giving program.

The 13TH Annual Clay County Chamber of Commerce Bass Tournament is set for Saturday, March 24, 2007.

The tournament location is at the public access ramp at the end of Ledford Chapel Road off Highway 64 East, Hayesville. Registration will take place at 6:00 a.m. and the tournament will start promptly at 7:00. The entry fee for this event is $60.00, one or two fishermen per boat. No refunds. Boats will be drawn after registration on the day of the tournament. Weigh-in begins at 4:00 p.m. Six cash prizes will be awarded as follows: $1,000 First Prize, $400 Second, $300 Third, $200 Fourth, $100 Fifth, $100 Sixth, and $100 for the Biggest Fish. Free coffee, biscuits and donuts will be provided. This event is open to the public and everyone is invited, so come on down and catch the big fish!

YARD SALE

The Valley River Civitan Club is looking for household items, furniture, sports equipment, gently used clothing or other donations in good condition for their first annual Civitan Community Yard Sale scheduled for Saturday, April 7, 2007, in the Ingles parking lot in Andrews.

Leo Girard, yard sale organizer, says,we want this to be a huge annual event which will raise money for Civitan service projects and benefit the community. Leo will pick up your donations if you call him at 321-0458.

The Valley River Civitan Club was chartered in August 2006 with 32 members. The Civitan mission is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

NC Civitan clubs support the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Civitan Research Center at Duke University, Special Oympics of North Carolina, Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, and Victory Junction Camp for children with disabilities, as well as local community needs.

The club continues to recruit for new members. Anyone interested in the service, knowledge and fellowship Civitan has to offer is encouraged to call Anita Davis at 835-8500.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY

Good Friday, April 6, 2007 will be a holiday for Clay County Schools. This will make Spring Break one day longer then originally planned. Clay County Schools has missed only one day of school this year to making it possible to extend the Spring Break to Good Friday.

SINGLES ACTIVITY CLUB

Make-A-Date Singles Activity Club is hosting a Dance/Dinner at the Mill Creek Country Club in Franklin , NC on April 7, 2007 at 6:30 pm.

CULINARY CLASS

Stecoah Valley Food Ventures will be offering another Culinary Retreat Cooking Class on Saturday, April 14 at 10:00 until 2:00. The name of the class is: Great Beginnings and Sweet Endings The focus of this class will be on appetizers, garnishes & petit sweets Class fee of $55.00 includes everything for the class. Students will eat and take home food made in the class.

Learn to prepare a variety of appetizers using filo dough, puff pastry and other creative appetizer foundations. Students will learn a variety of ways to use a pastry bag from piping cream puff swans to creating miniature roses for petits fours.
