Track teams begin season with a bang The women and men track teams from Hayesville began their season with a fantastic start. They competed at Murphy High School against three other Smoky Mountain Conference teams from: Andrews, Hiwassee Dam and Murphy on Wednesday, March 14th. In the women's part of the meet, the HHS women earned ten first place finishes in the seventeen event contested.Madelaine roberts and Christelle Vereb each had two individual first places. Madelaine in the Long and Triple Jumps and Chistelle in the 100 and 200 meters. Nancy Kelly was the top point earner for Hayesville getting a first in the 1600 and two second place finishes in the 800 and 3200 meters. Other first place finishes for the women were: 4x 800 Relay Courtney Sheldon, Holly Runstrom, Heather Richbourg, and Stella Snowden. This same group of women runners also won the 4x200 Relay. Paige Crisp, Carissa Dancer, Andrea Ball and Christelle Vereb teamed up to win the 4x100 Relay in a very fast early season time. Stella Snowden won the individual 800 meters and Paige MnQuade, Holly Runstrom, Heather Richbourg, and Stella Snowden ran to victory in the 4x400 Relay. The Women's team had seven qualify for the West Region Championship in their first meet. In the men's part of the meet, the Jackets earned seven first place finishes lead by the outstanding performance of Jonathan Shively. Jonathan had three individual first place finish and ran in a winning relay. He won the men's Long and Triple Jumps and the 200 meters. He teamed with Jordan Jones, Josh Holloway and Sean Henrikson to win the 4x200 Relay of: Kevin McCreary,S. Henrikson , Kyle Ingram and Levi Gentle. Kyle Ingram won the 1600 meters, Sean Henrikson won the 800 meters, Levi Gentle won the 3200 meters and Kyle Henrikson , Sean Henrikson, Jordan Jones, and Kevin McCreary won the 4x400 Relay. Jordan Jones also won the individual 400 meter dash. The men's team qualified four events to the West Region Championship from their first meet.
Hayesville track teams will next compete against Cherokee, Robbinsville , and Swain at the Swain High School Track on Wednesday , March 21st..
