Youth Grants Available Jason Rhinhardt, Chairperson of the Clay County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, announced this week that the Clay County Youth Endowment and the JCPC will be awarding $2,300 in grants to help fund prevention programs for youth. Rhinehardt noted that preference will be given to youth service agencies providing services to multiple youth though individuals are welcome to apply. Last year the JCPC awarded $2000 in grants. The recipients were Pathways, an after school program for middle school students:The Clay County Recreational Basketball program led by Doc Staton; and the Tri- State Junior Golf Association based at The Ridges. Organizations and individuals should prepare a brief statement containing the name of the organization, contact person, proposed use of funds, who would benefit, and how much is being requested. Applications should be addressed to the Clay County JCPC and mailed to P.O. Box 1295, Hayesville, NC 28904. The applications deadline is April 30th with grant receipts being notified prior to the end of May. The Juvenile Crime Prevention Council initiated the Clay County Youth Endowment six years ago. Today the Endowment is a component fund of the Clay County Community Foundation that part of North Carolina Community foundation. Each year the JCPC spongers a Youth Endowment Golf Tournament that raises funds for the Youth Endowment. Today the Endowment boasts over $20,000 in it's account and is the largest JCPC sponsored Youth Endowment in the state of NC. Mark your calender for April 26 from 5:30-7:30 on the square. The Clay County Tobacco Awareness Group, CCTAG, from Hayesville High School will be holding Kick the Habit Day. This will be a family event to Kick the Habit, against Tobacco, Alcohol, and drugs. 1,200 lives a day are loss to the results of tobacco use only, 342 people die from alcohol-related death, and 47 people die every day from illegal drugs. There will be empty shoes around the square representing those lives that are lost each day, shoes of loved one that the square representing those lives that are lost each day, shoes of loved one that are not there that day. You will be able to write a message because I Care In Honor of someone how has passed away. You will be able to write your message before the event at Mountain Valley Country Store, Nantahala Bank, United Bank, the Clay County Progress, and the Clay County Health Department starting April 16 or at the event. These messages will be attached to the shoes around the square. The students will lead the program, the event will begin and close with a blessing , Clay County commissioners and Joe Shook, sheriff, will speak, along with messages from our state representing. There will be entertainment, ballon art, face painting, information on tobacco use, alcohol, and drugs, of shoes. Stop by the information booth at the event to register. This event is being partnered with the Coalition for a Sage and Drug Free Clay County Communities and schools, Clay County Health Department, Clay County Healthy Carolinas Partnership, and Murphy Medical Center. This student initiative is bring the community together to Kick the habit.
