CRUSIN' Rare Buick GSX
Q: Greg, I was quite surprised to see your column about Buick's legendary GS and GSX, the beautiful but forgotten muscle master. I haven't forgotten them, however, as I own a 1972 GSX with the Stage 1 option. My father was the original owner, and I remember he special ordered it in 1971 (one of the very few in Canada). I spent much of my youth cruising in this car with my dad. This was also the car I drove the first summer I had my driver's license. I loved turning heads with that monster of a car. My GSX is silver with a black roof. There do not seem to be any hard numbers on how many GSXs with the Stage 1 option were produced in '72, let alone how many made it to Canada. All I know is that the one that really matters is in my garage. Thank you for re-exposing the world to one of the best muscle cars ever built and further increasing a guy's pride. Any further info on Buick GSXs would be greatly appreciated. - Jeff M., North of the Border!

A: Jeff, I wish I had a GSX in my garage! As for your trying to find out how many GSXs were built in 1972, a total of 7,723 GS models were built that year, but General Motors does not break down how many GSXs were built. However, according to Jeff Cornish, who has a great Web site devoted to Buick GS models (see http://home.flash.net/~stanbrad/p 72gsxrst.htm/ and also http://home.flash.net/~stanbrad/ for his home page), you are the owner of one of possibly only 44 1972 Buick GSX models ever built, so you have an ultra-rare muscle car in your possession. I would contact Jeff for more info, as I'm sure he would be happy for you to sign his guest book and send in a few photos of your GSX. Let me know if you do.
