Hiawassee River Watershed Fundraiser

5-Year Study of Lake Chatuge Results in Action Plan for Improvements First Public Presentation at May 4th Fundraiser.

After five years of intensive monitoring, aerial photography, computer modeling and discussion among water quality experts, the Lake Chatuge Watershed Action Plan is complete! The plan will be presented publicly for the first time at a fundraiser on May 4th at Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris, GA.

In 2001, the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition received a $216,000 appropriation from the Georgia legislature to determine the causes of Poor ecological health ratings in Chatuge and Nottely Reservoirs and to develop Action Plans for improving water quality conditions. The Lake Chatuge Watershed Action Plan is now complete. This comprehensive report encompasses a wide variety of water quality concerns within the 189-square mile drainage area of Lake Chatuge. Although these issues are described and discussed, the purpose of the plan is to recommend actions that, if implemented, will result in an improvement in Lake Chatuge's ecological health rating as determined by TVA's Reservoir Vital Signs Monitoring Program. With only one exception, Lake Chatuge has received Poor ecological health ratings every year for the past nine years.

HRWC is currently working to raise funds for Action Plan implementation. The public is invited to beautiful Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris on May 4th at 5:30pm. The event will feature tastings of local wines offered by Crane Creek Vineyards and locally grown, freshly prepared organic appetizers. And, as if that isn't enough, Butternut Creek & Friends will provide live music too! At 6:30pm, HRWC staff will make a presentation of the Lake Chatuge Watershed Action Plan and free copies will be available that evening. Tickets are $15.00. Glasses of wine may be purchased for $5.00 each at the event. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.

After the event, the Lake Chatuge Watershed Action Plan will be available free of charge for download from the HRWC website and in hard copy while supplies last. Lake Chatuge may look pretty good right now, and it IS currently safe to swim in, but algae levels are on the increase. We must act now to protect and improve the lake for the future!
