Start date for next school year

In other news from the State Legislature, Penland told board members that schools across the state are still waiting on law makers to make a final decision concerning the start date for the next school year.Although still in limbo, Clay County School Board members went ahead and approved the 2007-2008 School Calendar contingent upon the fact that the NC Legislature ratifies House Bill 359 which will give North Carolina Schools the option of starting school before Aug. 25th. Currently NC law prohibits school systems from starting the school year prior to Aug. 25th, a measure which was passed two years ago after pressure from the travel and tourism industry in the state who wanted the summer vacation season lengthened.
Clay County School Superintendent asked board members to go ahead and pass two possible versions of the calendar with the only difference being the first day of school. If the house votes to change the start date, Clay County's first day of school would be Friday, Aug. 24. This would allow for a teacher work day on Jan. 2, Penland explained, which teachers have requested to help them prepare following the Christmas break. If the legislation changing the start date is not passed, Penland said the calendar would reflect the first day of school as Monday, Aug. 25, and the Jan. 2 workday would be removed from the calendar. Spring break is set for April 7-11. The last day of school is set for June 5.
