HARVEY will open May 18th at the Peacock Playhouse in Hayesville. Many will remember the movie with Jimmy Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd. Originally, HARVEY was a Broadway play which opened in 1944. Mary Chase, the author, had only written one play before HARVEY, and it was a flop. No one believed HARVEY would succeed. Several well-known actors refused the role of Elwood P. Dowd, the role eventually made famous by Jimmy Stewart. Frank Fay, an old vaudeville comic actor, took the part. The play was well- received and ran for a long time, but when Jimmy Stewart was brought in as a replacement critics raved and HARVEY was reborn. Fay had played Dowd as a little tipsy, but Stewart played the part as a gentle, kind man who happened to have an invisible 6 foot tall rabbit as his best friend. Elwood buys two seats on a train or two tickets to the movies so they can do everything together. His sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, finally get tired of being embarrassed by their brother, and besides Myrtle Mae wants to find someone to marry. They decide to commit Elwood to the sanitarium. Things do not go as expected. Playing Elwood's sister is Virginia Mattox, and Michelle Stewart plays her daughter. They ought to have this down pat, because they also played mother and daughter in THE DIARY OF ANN FRANK at the playhouse. Michelle has not been back to the playhouse since Ann Frank, so it is quite a coincidence that they are once again mother and daughter.
Director Vianne Payne has an excellent cast and playgoers should have a very enjoyable time rooting for Elwood and Harvey.
The play runs May 18th, - -20th and May 25th---27th. Evening performances begin at 8 with Sunday matinees at 2:30. Tickets are $13 for adults and $8 for students. The box office will be open May 14-18 and May 21-25 from 10 to 4. You can also call for tickets: 877-691-9906 or 828-389-8632. You can leave a message and someone will return your call.
