To the Editor, Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District board and staff wish to thank the Clay County Commissioners, Hayesville Middle School faculty, Clay County Farm Bureau, Area 1 Envirothon Committee, Clay County NC Cooperative Extension Service, Dale Wade, Doug Somervell, Brian Wood, Glenn Carson and the Envirothon team members and their parents. Thanks to their generosity, thoughtfulness and support for environmental learning, nine Hayesville Middle School students were able to compete at a State Envirothon Competition. The contest was held on April 27th & 28th, 2007 in Burlington N.C. By participating in this program students gain an added awareness of natural resources and the effects our actions have on our ecosystem. They learn about Aquatics, Current Environmental Issues, Forestry, Soils, and Wildlife. The outdoor competition involves hands-on activities, and information relevant to these resource areas. The tests are taken as a team and hopefully these lessons and teamwork will be remembered for many years to come. The biggest thank you, for a job well done, goes to the nine students for taking time from their busy lives to participate in the Envirothon. The "Lemons"team members were; Ashley Miller, Sarah Bradshaw, Rose Goyette, and David Craig. The "Mushrooms" team members were; Tori Cantrell, Callie Jamison, Meredith Butler, Jeremy Lallement, and Avery Stepp. I enjoyed our time together and I am proud of all of you. These two Clay County Middle School Envirothon teams can be a source of pride to all of our residents. The Hayesville Middle School faculty and students work hard and demonstrate a strong interest in managing Clay Countyís natural resources. Keep up the good work. Yours truly, Leanna Staton CEE Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District Administrative Assistant/ Education Coordinator Please Share the Road Bicycle riders were thankful when the Dept. of Transportation built up the sides of area roadways with an additional several feet of shoulder. Bicycle riding is becoming more popular but, of course, the biggest challenge for riders is staying out of traffic. The shoulder, albeit narrow, afforded riders a safety lane on our busier roadways. Recently, we were stunned by the grinding of these shoulders to make "rumble strips". These strips deny bicycle riders of what little safety zone was available and put them back out into the traffic lane. The motoring public needs to know that bike riders are not happy to be in traffic and would feel much safer on shoulders. However, in light of this latest development, the "rumble strips", we respectfully request that motorists "share the road" and work with local bikers to make our roadways "rider friendly".
