Track teams do well at SMC Championship

Courtney Sheldon ran the second leg of the 4x800 relay. This relay team was undefeated this year.
The women and men's track teams ran to a second and third place overall finish at the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship meets held at Swain County High School on Wednesday, April 25th.

The teams from Hayesville had some exceptional individual performances but could not overcome the strength of the teams from Swain in the women , and Robbinsville in the men.

The leaders on the HHS women's teams were: Madelaine Roberts and Stella Snowden. Madelaine won the long jump, and earned two second

place finishes in the High Jump and Triple Jump. This effort earned her the Field MVP trophy. Stella won the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and was the anchor on the winning 4x800 relay team. Courtney Sheldon, Holly Runstrom, and Heather Richbourg teamed with Stella for the win. The 4x100 Relay team of: Paige Crisp, Carissa Dancer, Andrea Ball, and Christelle Vereb earned All-Conferencewith their first place finish. All together, the women's team earned nine All- Conference selections and six honorable mention All- Conferences. All- Conference is earned by winning your specific event and Honorable Mention is earned by getting second in a specific event. All-Conference selections were: Madelaine Roberts, Stella Snowden, Courtney Sheldon, Holly Runstrom, Heather Richbourg, Paige Crisp, Carissa Dancer, Andrea Ball, and Christelle Vereb. Honorable Mentioned were earned other events by Andrea Ball, Madelaine Roberts, Paige Crisp, Carissa Dancer, and Christelle Vereb.

In the men's competition, Jonathan Shively, Kyle Ingram, and Levi Gentle led the HHS men. Shively earned second in the long jump, third in the triple and 200 meters and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay. Kyle Ingram ran on the second place 4x800 relay team, finished, second in the 1600 meters, third in the 800 meters and ran in the 4x400 relay. Levi Gentle finished second on the 3200 meters and 4th in the 1600 meters. He also teamed with Ryan Gentle, Sean Henrikson, and Ingram to place second in the 4x800 relay race. All second place finishes earned: Shively, Ingram, Levi Gentle, and Sean Henrikson Honorable Mention All-Conference honors.

The Hayesville track teams will now enter the State Play- Offs. The Hayesville Track teams have qualified a total of twenty-four athletes to the West Region Championship, held at Polk County High School on Saturday, May 5th. The top four finishers in any event will qualify for the State Championship on May 11th.

The men's team has qualified thirteen team members in eleven event. In order to qualify, the minimum time or distance must be met. Qualifiers for the men are: Tim Coker, Levi Gentle, Ryan Gentle, Sean Henrikson, Josh

Holloway, Tyler Hyatt, Kyle Ingram, Jordan Jones, Kyle Lickteig, Jacob Nicholson, Tino Scolero, Jonathan Shively, and Jared Tanner.

The women's team has qualified twelve athletes in eleven events. The women's team has multiple entries in specific events such as the 1600 meters where the maximum of three per team is allowed. Hayesville has three qualified for that event. Region Qualifiers for the women are: Andrea Ball, Rachel Bush, Paige Crisp, Carissa Dancer, Heather Richourg, Madelaine Roberts, Rebecca Robinson, Holly Runstrom, Courtney Sheldon, Stella Snowden, and Christelle Vereb.
