Kicking the habit
Carla Gwaltney Owens Sentinel Writer

The shoes represented the1200 lives lost each day from use of tobacco.
The Clay County Tobacco Awareness Group, CCTAG, from Hayesville High School, held Kick the Habit Day in Downtown Hayesville recently and were thankful that the day long downpour stopped just in time for them to spread the word about the dangers of substance abuse.

The rain, which began early Thursday morning, stopped just long enough for the local student lead group to place shoes all around the square in an effort to bring awareness to the lives lost due to substance abuse each day in the United States.

The sun even broke through for the two hour long event which students had worked very hard to prepare for over the past several months. CCTAG plans to make "Kick The Habit Day" an annual event.

The event was to help Clay County residents "Kick the Habit" of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. CCTAG provided entertainment, balloon art, face painting and food for those who attended.

Twelve hundred pairs of shoes were placed around the square to represent the lives lost each day due to the use of tobacco.

An additional 342 people die each day from alcohol-related deaths and 47 die each day from illegal drug use.

This special community event was made possible by the partnership of the Coalition for a Safe and Drug Free Clay County, Communities in Schools, Clay County Health Department, Clay County Healthy Carolinians Partnership, and Murphy Medical Center.
