CALENDAR Relay for Life The American Cancer Society will sponsor "Relay for Life" on June 8 and 9 on the historic Hayesville Courthouse Square. Free Diabetes classes Every Wednesday between 4 and 7 p.m., diabetes instruction is available free of charge at the Moss Memorial Library in Hayesville. The emphasis will be on understanding what diabetes is and how to do carbohydrate counting. Bring your logbooks, questions and meters with you. Family members are also welcome. Free WRAP classes Free weekly WRAP classes are being offered every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. in Clay County at the Hayesville office of Murphy Counseling (the old Smoky Mountain Center). Wellness Recovery Action Planning, i.e. WRAP, is a 10-week course that teaches you an approach for managing mental health and/or substance abuse symptoms that are interfering with your life. WRAP can provide you with HOPE that you can recover and reach for your goals! Certified facilitators are employees of Meridian Behavioral Health Services and have reached a place in their own recovery to offer hope, education and support to others. Classes are free and you can begin at any time. Come join us as we explore proven ways to regain our wellness. There is HOPE for a better life! Clay County is going to enjoy Relay for Life earlier than was first announced! Everyone will gather on the Square in Hayesville as planned previously; however, the dates will now be June 1, beginning at 6 p.m. and extending to June 2, 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.! We want to encourage everyone to keep June 8 open and on their calendar, as Hayesville High School will be holding their Class of 2007 Graduation Ceremony on this date. Relayers are proud to move over for the "Future Relayers" to reap the rewards for completing their elementary and high school educations. Congratulations Class of 2007, we believe in your ability to change the future and continue the fight to eradicate Cancer in your life time. Everything stays the same for Relay wrap-up activities, which includes delicious food and entertainment for all ages! So take out your markers, get down your calendars, fire up your Blackberries, text message your friends and be on the Square in Hayesville at 6 p.m. on June 1, and June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.! See you there, Clay County. Library Book Store We're ready for spring with a new coat of paint and hundreds of donations! Save $$$ on all your favorite books (and records too!) and help support Moss Memorial Library. Hidden Treasures is open every Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is also accepting donations of gently used household items during business hours. Women's Resources Will be holding Holiday survival skills classes at the Moss Memorial Library every Monday & Friday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for five weeks starting April 16, 2007. We will be conducting tours of the hospital and medication card assistance, on a first-come first-served basis from 9-3 p. m. Put all your medications in a bag and meet with a medical professional who will help you list all your current medications on a free medication card, compliments of Murphy Medical. Medications include prescription drugs, over the counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements. Once again that's Wednesday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thank you for allowing us to show you our facilities and help you have an accurate and current medication list to keep in your wallet for emergencies. Yearbook Day: May 18 H.E.S., H.M.S. & H.H.S. students will follow class schedules to pick up books. Parents/Guardians may come to the high school media center to pick up reserved books beginning at 10 a.m. Students who owe money on reserved books should bring CASH on May 18. A limited number of extra books will be available for purchase in the high school media center at 2 p.m. on a first-comefirst serve basis. Cost: $46.00, CASH ONLY! Acreage Reports Due The Cherokee/Clay/Graham Counties Farm Service Agencies requires all farm owners/operators to report acreage annually before June 30th, even if the land is idle or grass. Good Neighbors The next meeting of the Good Neighbors Auto Club will be Thursday, May 17 at Meeks Park in Blairsville, GA. Come early to fellowship and enjoy our pot luck dinner. Members are asked to bring a dish to share. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come and share the love of the car hobby. You do NOT have to own a vehicle to join or attend our meetings. If you have an old car or truck that has been restored or modified or a new vehicle that has been modified, you are welcome to come to our meetings. We meet the third Thursday of each month. Each month we donate to a charity. Last month's charity was to a Trust at United Community Bank for Michael Kapler's daughter's college fund. Business Workshops SCORE, the Small Business Administration's (SBA) volunteer arm is bringing its business workshops and counseling services to the tri-county area. The workshops will cover such subjects as "Business Planning," "Product and Service Pricing," "Financing Your Business" and "Marketing for Small Businesses." The initial workshop will be "Business Planning" and will be presented on Tuesday May 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cadence Bank's conference room in Blairsville; a light dinner will be provided. The workshop is complimentary to Chamber of Commerce members of the Clay, Towns or Union County chambers. A charge of $40 per person for the three hour workshop will be charged for non-chamber members. Attendees joining the chamber within a week of the workshop will have their attendance fees applied to their chamber dues. The book shop is located on Court House Square in Hayesville. Mtn. Beekeepers Smoky Mountain Beekeepers will hold an advanced beekeeping school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 16, featuring Robin Mountain, president of the Kentucky Beekeepers Association. Basic bee biology and queen rearing will be covered, and the ses- sion will include a hands-on grafting session. The school will be held in the main gymnasium at Southwestern Community College's Swain County Center, 60 Almond Road, off U.S. 19/74 west of Bryson City. Lunch will be provided. The charge is $10, payable by cash or check. Call the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service by noon on June 14 at 586-4009 to register. Smoky Mountain Beekeepers is made up of beekeepers from Jackson and Swain counties and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Yard Sale Treasures Hidden Treasures Thrift Shop is hosting a huge yard sale June and 2 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. The yard sale will be across from the Moss Memorial Library and will offer great bargains on everything. All proceeds benefit the library. Museum Events The Clay County Historical and Arts Council Old Jail Museum will open its doors for the 2007 summer season on Saturday, May 26 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Special events are planned from 1-3, including live music, food, various demonstrations and a fantastic raffle. Local artists Glen Love and Ann Sutherlin will donate a beautifully turned bowl and an outstanding basket as prizes. The drawing will be held at 3 p.m. Our two rotating exhibits this year are not only educational but a true visual history of generations gone by and their imaginations. In the gallery room we are fortunate to have the Preservation Committee of the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center teaming up with local artists to present a remarkable exhibit of Western NC wildflowers in art form. This is a must see. Come join us and bring friends and family to observe a painter, basketweaver, quilter and others demonstrate their skills. This will be the first time the museum has opened on Memorial Day weekend and we're looking toward a great season. On May 26 special events are planned from 1-3 p.m. or, if you can't make it then, our hours are from 10 a.m.-4p.m. during the Memorial weekend and Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through Labor Day. The museum is a fascinating piece of Clay County history and a living work in progress for all local and long-time residents to enjoy. Hope to see you there! The Big 50
