Bringing home the gold
4x800 team hits pay dirt

State Champions: Stella Snowden, Heather Richbourg, Courtney Sheldon, and Holly Runstrom. First place for the second year in a row.
The Hayesville High School women's track team earned 4th place overall in the state championship at Greensboro on Friday, May 11. The women's 4x800 relay team earned state championship in that event for the second consecutive year. Courtney Sheldon, Holly Runstrom, Heather Richbourg and Stella Snowden ran record time to earn the state title and all-state honors for their effort.

The meet had 37 teams represented with the top 16 competitors in the state contesting the 18 track events. The women's team had some very exceptional finishes against the talent.

In the women's high jump, Madelaine Roberts earned medal honors, finishing second overall with a jump of 5'2". Roberts also scored in the tripple jump with a jump of 34'2" for 5th place. In order to earn points a contestant must be in the top eight finishers.

Runstrom finished 4th in the 1600 meters, and Richbourg was 5th in the 800 meters. Rebecca Robinson earned team points in the discus throw, getting 5th overall. The 4x400 relay team of Paige Crisp, Sheldon, Runstrom and Richbourg finished 8th overall in the event.

Snowden ran four events in the state meet. In addition to her state title in the 4x800 relay, she was 9th in the 1600 meters, 7th in the 800 meters and 9th in the 3200 meters, running a total of 6400 meters or four miles for the day.

Other women's team members who had very good performances against the competition included Andrea Ball in the long jump and Carissa Dancer, Christelle Vereb and Crisp with whom Ball later teamed to earn a 9th place finish in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays,

The entire team is to be congratulated for their outstanding performances throughout the year and in the state championship.
