Celebrate Memorial Day with local VFW

The Allison-Bristol VFW Post 6812 would like to invite the public to help us celebrate Memorial Day on Saturday May 26, at 1 p.m on the town square. Buddy Poppies will be available throughout the day. All veterans of a foreign wars are invited to join our local post.

As a veteran you may wonder just what Post 6812 of Hayesville does for the residents of Clay County and the troops serving our country today.

We provide financial assistance to veterans, active service members and their families.

Donations are made annually to Asheville VA, where our veterans can get medical assistance.

Our combat troops are provided with a $100.00 Post Exchange credit card. They are also sent phone cards so they may keep in touch with family members here at home.

If you or a loved one is now serving in a combat zone we will provide a Blue Star Banner to your family, so they may show the pride they have for your service to our country. We pray not to have any veterans Killed In Action, but Gold Star Banners are provided for the families of veterans serving in a combat zone, who may have shown the ultimate sacrifice.

Do you know we have a Burial Detail for funeral services to ALL Clay County and a portion of Cherokee County veterans? Please, let your family know you want to be buried with full military honors. This is a FREE service provided by Post 6812, American Legion Post 96, DAV Chapter 73 and VFW Post 10222.

We provide and maintain the American and Prisoner Of War- Missing in Action flags at the town square, the senior center, Moss Memorial Library, their book store and at the baseball field, where Post 6812 is located in the John Corn Building. Flags are also donated to county organizations.

Drive or walk by the veterans memorial on the square. With fresh flowers planted twice a year, the memorial to our heroes always looks beautiful. Our American and PO-MIA flags fly proudly above reminding us of the many sacrifices our veterans endure. This memorial is kept up by the post members.

Widows of veterans are given fruit baskets during the Christmas season.

$100.00 scholarships are awarded to the two top students in the athletic field of our school.

One of the Little League baseball teams is sponsored by Post 6812 and a picnic is held to say "Good job!" to our team after the last game.

We lease the grounds and buildings of the sports complex of Clay County to: Clay County, the Clay County School District and the Black and Gold Association for an annual fee of $1.00.

The Post holds their meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the John Corn building. The exception to this is a quarterly pot luck dinner held at the Senior Center on Ritter Road at 6 p.m. for all Clay County veterans and their families on the 4th Thursday of March, June, September and December.

Memorial Day is very special to our veterans. Flags are placed at the graves of all our fallen veterans for the Memorial Day weekend. In the morning you will find veterans are around the town square and other places of business in town to say "hello" to all and give out their Buddy Poppies. (All donations are used for helping the veterans of Clay County.) Then at 1 p.m. at the gazebo on the square a ceremony is held with the flag raising and then lowered to half mast at the Veterans Memorial. All veterans, their families and residents of Clay county are encouraged to be there to show support to all of our veterans now serving and to show respect to all our fallen veterans, especially those heroes whose names are on the Memorial Wall on the square.
