Alice R. Warren Murray

Alice R. Warren Murray, 90, of Hayesville died Friday (May 18, 2007) in a Clay County care center. A native of Eganville, Ontario, Canada, she had lived in Clay County since 1958. She was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Warren and the wife of the late Arthur C. Murray, who died March 6, 1995.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Murray, who died Sept. 18, 1978; a beloved grandchild, Kalie Shore McClure; and two brothers, Mills and Thomas Warren.

During Mrs. Murray's life in her beloved Western North Carolina mountains, she was very active in local and church activities. She, her husband, and four children were the first Catholic family to live in the area and were instrumental in the development, building and growth of the Catholic church in Hayesville. Mrs. Murray was active on many committees within the church and was one of the founding members of Granny's Attic.

On their 50th anniversary, Mrs. Murray was written about in the local paper for her unique and interesting apparel for her anniversary celebration. She decided to wear a special black lace dress that had been purchased more than 50 years earlier. The dress was bought for a dance which she attended with her husband, Arthur before they were married. It fit her still and she was radiant at the celebration of their 50th. She will wear this same dress in her burial.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol Maloof and husband, Robert of Young Harris, GA and Patricia McClure and husband, Lake of Hiawassee, GA; a son, Bill Murray and wife, Jean of Savannah, GA; four sisters, Eliza Boland and Isabel Montgomery both of Cobden, Ontario, Canada, Ruth Smith of Finch, Ontario, Canada, and Ethel Mulholland of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey and Stephen Maloof, Michael, Patrick, and Timothy McClure, and Bryan, Scott, and Allison Murray; 12 beautiful great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass was held at 11:30 a.m. Monday (May 21) in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fathers George Kloster and Robert Bond officiating. Interment in Laurel Hills Memory Garden. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers: Jeffrey and Stephen Maloof, Michael, Patrick, and Timothy McClure, and Bryan, Scott, and Allison Murray.

The family received friends from 10-11:15 Monday morning at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Alice R. Warren Murray to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Building Fund, PO Box 546, Murphy, NC 28906 or the Clay County Rescue Squad, c/o David Crisp, PO Box 325, Hayesville, NC 28904.
