Veterans honor the fallen for Memorial Day
"Years ago we would have had a great turnout," Thomas Lyvers commented. "This is very sad," he added about the sparse turnout of local citizens to remember those local service members who had died serving their community and country, and those living veterans who spent time serving in the military. The majority of those in attendance were older senior citizens who had lived through and experienced first-hand the wars of the past, including local veterans who had served their country during wartime. Opening prayer on Saturday was offered by Pastor Bo Ford, while Navy veteran Chuch Reiford played while the American flag was raised and for the placing of the wreath on the memorial at the square by one of Clay County's oldest veterans, George Lee. Members of the Hayesville Middle School Junior Civitan Club, Ashton Owens and Brittney Dills, participated in the ceremony on Saturday by reading the names of the honored service members from WWI, WWII and the Vietnam War. Sheriff Joe Shook also participated in Saturday's service by speaking to local veterans and thanking them for their service to the community and to the country. Shook said that many of his classmates from school served and died in the Vietnam War. Shook thanked all those who have served in the Armed Forces over the years to guarantee our freedom and the life we enjoy in Clay County. Musical entertainment was provided by veteran Reiford who played several numbers on his trumpet and by local musicians and singers Jimmy Hogsed, Annie Lloyd, Vickie and Brandon Coker and Claire Decker. Lyvers announced that new officers will be installed at the VFW Post 6812 in July, including Michael Walters who will be installed as the new commander.
