Thousands of dollars raised by event held on the square for the first time

In May 1985 Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon, spent 24 hours circling the track at the university in Tacoma, Washington, raising $27,000 for cancer research. As a result, the Relay For Life has grown and, over twenty years later, nearly 5,000 relays are scheduled every year.
