Cycling for Civitan a success
ANNA MITCHELL Sentinel Writer

It was a small but successful turnout for the first annual Cycling for Civitan on Saturday at Konehete Park. Three bikers showed up to trek the five-mile course that wound through town and back to the park.

For the participants it was a fun excuse to pull out their bikes and help benefit their community. "It was hard but fun." said youngster Ben Flaws, who rode alongside his mother Katrina Flaws. "It's important to do whatever we can to help people in need." said Katrina after the race.

The Civitan Club plans to merge forces with the Murphy Police Department for a bicycle rodeo to teach bicycle safety and skills to children. The goal of the Civitan Club is to "to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities."

While the gathering was small this year, Civitan members are confident that next year will bring a larger crowd. The Civitan Club would like to thank the following businesses and individuals that helped in the success of the biking event: RC Cola, Indian Hills Spring Water, Infinity Salon and Spa, Appalachian Outfitters, Henn Theatre, Spin Lite Bicycle Shop, Murphy High School Art Class, Peachtree Restaurant, H&R Block, Valley River Barber Shop, Mountain Brew Coffee House, The Hitchhikers, Murphy Police Department, Murphy Rescue Squad, NC Highway Patrol, Konehete Park Recreation Center, Cherokee Sentinel, Cherokee Scout Ken Thigpen and everyone in the Murphy Civitan Club.

The Civitan Club meets the 1st and third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. For information call Nancy Mills at 494-7245.
