George Esau Morgan

George Esau Morgan, a Clay County Resident, passed away peacefully May 30th, 2007 at the age of 85 at the Murphy Medical Center in Murphy, NC. Mr. Morgan was born November 10, 1921 in Fontana, NC to the late Ray and Amanda Morgan. He grew up in the Andrews area and has spent over 80 years as a Clay County Resident. He served in the 28th Infantry Division of the Army during World War II and landed on the Normandy Beaches during D-Day. Returning home after the war he met his future wife, Marie Hutchins Morgan, and they were married six months later. They made their home in Hayesville but spent short periods of time in West Virginia and Tennessee while he was pursuing work in the sawmill industry. In the 1950's George and Marie returned to Hayesville and began a life of farming in the Tusquittee community. He became a member of the Clay County Masonic Lodge and the Clay County V.F. W. Post.

In his free time, George enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, tinkering in his tool shop, telling war stories, sharing peppermints and Pepsi- Colas, telling jokes, and most of all-spending time with those he loved. His sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to all those around him and his hospitality will be sorely missed.

George is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie Hutchins Morgan; three children, Carolyn Diane Buckner and Tom of Hayesville, NC, Michael Morgan and Jacqueline of Hayesville, NC, and Marlene Wilson and Gary of Marble, NC; three siblings, Glover Morgan and Opal of Alto, GA, Vincent Morgan and Dorothy of Lynn Haven, FL, and Ruth Strickland of Sharpsburg, GA; nine grandchildren, Rosemary Penland, Jessica Paulsen, Michael-Ray Morgan, Laura Hughes,

Rachel and Morgan Wilson, and Julia, Joseph, and Jennifer Buckner; five greatgrandchildren, Cheyanna, Nathaniel, and Serenna Penland, Gavin Morgan, and Maggie Buckner; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 P.M., Sunday June 3rd, 2007 at the Townson Rose Chapel in Hayesville, NC. Rev. Robert Bond, Julia Buckner, and Rev. Lyndon Anderson officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons Joseph Buckner, Michael Ray Morgan and members of the Clay Lodge #301 AF & AM. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Garrett, Stephen Long, Bill Norton and Jim Watkins who are close friends of the family. Interment will be in the Shiloh Baptist

Church Cemetery in Hayesville, NC with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by the Clay Lodge #301 AF & AM, and Military Graveside Rites conducted by Veterans Organizations: Murphy V. F. W. Post # 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post # 96, D. A. V. Chapter # 73 and Clay County V. F. W. Post # 6812.

The family received friends from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M, Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 at the Townson Rose Chapel in Hayesville, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made In Memory of George Esau Morgan to the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 53 Laurel Branch Rd, Hayesville, NC 28904.
