More than boats, fish at Cherokee Chamber summer event

Jessica Wells, chamber information specialist, sits in the captain's chair in a pontoon at Nick's Marine, Murphy. Nick Hibberts, owner of Nick's Marine, gives Wells a sales pitch. The boat business will be one of the participants in the Cherokee County Chamber's first Fish Fry and Boat Show on June 23.
Boats, a fish fry, yard sale and vendors offering boating safety tips, giveaways and more on mountain and lake living will be highlights at the first Cherokee County Chamber Fish Fry and Boat Show on Saturday, June 23. The event will be staged at the TVA ramp and L&N Depot, both located along Valley River Avenue before entering historic downtown Murphy.

The show will open at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Fish sandwiches, coleslaw and a drink will be served between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Longhouse Restaurant is in charge of the fish fry. There is no charge to attend, however the fish fry will be $6 per person.

Participating are Smith Power, Nick's Marine, High Country Canvas, Appalachian Outfitters, Allen Kay Design, High Country River Adventures, Nantahala Outdoor Center, Longhouse Restaurant, Rose Insurance, Betsy Lane State Farm Insurance, Fontana Village, Carolina Buggies & Custom Golf Carts, Jim Barna Log Homes, Wal-Mart, and Mountain Spirit Essentials.

Entertainment includes The Last Rezort, playing classic rock and roll and winners of the Battle of the Bands at Western Carolina; Tim the Magician & Butterfly the Clown sponsored by Carpet Mart, and a dunking booth, sponsored by Doyle's Cedar Hill Restaurant. Local celebrities, including the Murphy Bulldog Football team starting lineup are expected to participate in the dunking booth.

The chamber is planning a yard sale that will include lighting fixtures and other "stuff" collected over the years. Donations for the yard sale are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the chamber and its building fund.

Businesses interested in participating can call 837-2242 for more information.
