Obituary: Larry Eugene Burke
He was born in Miami, Florida on July 1, 1947 and graduated from North Miami Senior High School in 1965. In 1969 he earned his Bachelor Degree from the University of Florida and in 1981 a Master's Degree from the University of North Florida. Larry served as an art teacher and assistant principal for over 30 years. He began his teaching career in 1969 at Eugene Butler in Duval County. His career path spanned several schools including Terry Parker, Sandalwood and Jeff Davis. He served as an assistant principal from 1981 until his retirement in 2003 from Kirby Smith Junior High School. Larry loved teaching and working with students and parents. He would spend extra hours after the school day tutoring and counseling students. After his retirement he continued his 8 year employment at Barnes and Noble Booksellers in St. Augustine, Florida where he is fondly remembered for being a great guy who always enjoyed helping customers. Larry was an extra special person who cared for his wond erful parents Alice and Benjamin Burke. They were the most important people in his life and freq uently traveled to North Carolina to assist them with personal and medi cal needs. Larry was very active in the Jacksonville and St. Augustine areas. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Hendricks Avenue in Jacksonville and served on the Board of Directors for the Ocean Village Club Condominium Association in St. Augustine. In addition he was a member of the Friends o f Jacksonville Public Library, Inc. and Friends of the Southeast Branch of the St. Johns County Public Library System in St. Augustine and assisted with both organizational book sales. He is survived by his mother Laura Alice (Lines) Burke and father Benjamin Charles Burke of Hayesville, NC; a sister, Barbara Ann (Burke) Galambos of St. Augustine; several nieces and nephews and his loving and faithful dog Ginger and dearest friend Harold R. Hines of Fruit Cove, Florida.Following cremation his remains will be scattered in the mountains at his parent's home in Hayesville, NC and also at St. Augustine Beach that he loved so dearly. Plans for the St. Augustine remembrance will be announced in the near future. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Truett Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 464, Hayesville, NC 28904, "In Memory of Larry Eugene Burke". Funds will be used to establish a facility for battered women, children and the elderly. Townson Rose Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
