Erecting a sign at the entrance to the new Jackrabbit Mountain Bike andHiking Trail may not seem like an important event to most. But, to those who have spent thousands of volunteer hours on this project during the past four years, it represents a milestone. With approximately half of the trails completed, this site has already gained the attention and use from many in the tristate region. A visiting mountain bike enthusiast (who has logged many miles on trails all across the USA) deemed the Jackrabbit Trail the 'Ritz- Carrolton' of mountain biketrails. Trail usage has been equally divided between the mountainbikers and hikers, who seem to co-exist like peanut butter and jelly.
Totaling just less than 7 miles, the three trails completed thus far are based on the stacked-loop design. This not only allows people the choice of mileage, but also degree of difficulty. Future plans includea parking lot to accommodate 50+ vehicles, a pavillion, restrooms, information board and a bike washing station. This project has been a collaborative effort between the Southern Appalachian Bicycling Association (www.sabacycling.com), the Clay County Revitalization Association and the USFS.
