Poetry and prose reading at John C. Campbell Folk School

If you were present last summer to hear Mary Lou McKillip and Brenda Kay Ledford read their original stories and poems at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina, you will want to put Thursday, June 28 (7:00 p.m.) on your calendar. They will both be reading again at the monthly program in the Keith House which is open to the public. There is no admission charge. Come and bring a friend for an hour you will enjoy.

A native of the mountains, McKillip lives in Marble, NC. She delights us every time we hear or read her wonderful stories about her life as it was years ago. Mary is a born story teller and is guaranteed to bring you many laughs as well as touch your heart. One of her stories, "B.J. King and the Big Fancy Church," appears in the anthology Lights in the Mountains which is available in Philips and Lloyd Bookstore, the Curiosity Shop and other local gift and book stores.

She also has a story in the anthology Moonshine and Blind Mules - Life in the Good Old Days in the Smoky Mountains published in 2006. Her work has been published in the 1st and 3rd editions of Cherokee County Heritage books in Murphy, NC. She is listed in the Literary Arts Register in Raleigh. McKillip's stories have also appeared in local newspapers in western North Carolina.

Ledford is a native of Clay County, NC. Ledford earned her Master of Arts in Education from Western Carolina University and went on to study Journalism at the University of Tennessee and Tri-County Community College. She's former Creative Writing Editor of "Tri-County Communicator." She has an outstanding list of accomplishments in the writing field including winning the Paul Green Multimedia Award in 2005 for her chapbook, "Patchwork Memories." Her work has appeared in "Our State," "Carolina Country," "Asheville Poetry Review," "Pembroke Magazine," "Main Street Rag" and other publications.

Ledford is a member of the North Carolina Poetry Society, the Tennessee Mountain Writers and the Byron Herbert Reece Society as well as the North Carolina Writers' Network West and the Georgia Mountain Writers' Club. She is also listed with a Directory of American Poets and Fiction Writers.

Besides writing poetry and articles for the newspapers, Brenda Kay enjoys playing piano and writing gospel songs. She began doing this about three years ago. Her mentors in this field were Narvell and Eddie Lee Garrett, very talented musicians. Brenda says she is inspired by our beautiful mountains and feels blessed to live in this lovely place.

"Poets and Writers Reading Poems and Stories" is sponsored by the North Carolina Writers' Network West and by the John C. Campbell Folk School.
