Women's appreciation dinner a success

Pam Roman/ Contributing Photographer Ladies of all ages enjoyed the Women's Appreciation Dinner event at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hayesville last Saturday.
"Beware of Greeks bearing gifts," was a cautionary saying in ancient times.

But, as the congregation of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hayesville will confirm, this omen doesn't apply to their Greek fellow member, Nicholas "Nick" George, chef extraordinaire, whose gifts are delicious international meals at many church events.

Last Saturday evening, Chef George, with the assistance of his culinary team, prepared an elegant Women's Appreciation Dinner for the ladies of Good Shepherd. The five-course meal featured popular foods he often enjoyed on the Isle of Santorini in his native Greece.

Beginning with an appetizer, dolmas (stuffed grape leaves), the meal continued with avgolimono (egg-lemon soup), followed by a Greek salad with Feta cheese and black olives. The main course was roast leg of lamb with rice pilaf and oriental zucchini. For dessert, the ladies enjoyed George's personal rendering of the traditional Greek favorite, Baklava (a delicious nut-filled pastry).

The Women's Appreciation Dinner is an annual event at Good Shepherd hosted by the men of the church in appreciation for the many behind-the-scenes tasks the ladies do throughout the year to make the church an inspirational house of worship.

The Rev. John Rice, Pastor, extends a warm welcome to residents and visitors alike to attend Sunday morning services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Good Shepherd is located one mile east of the traffic light on HWY #64 east in Hayesville.
