Fireworks on the 4th
CARLA G. OWENS Sentinel Writer

Preparations are well underway for the 2007 Clay County 4th of July Celebration. This year's celebration will start at 5:30 p.m. on the 4th at the Lake Chatuge Dam.

Music for this year's event will be provided by local talent "The Front Porch Rockers," starting at 6:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available from the Civitan Club, and the Fireworks Committee will be selling T-shirts and glow toys for children.

The fireworks display will launch at 9:45 p.m. from the same location as last year, just off the "Circle"-side of the spillway. This year's display promises to be the best ever, weather permitting.

"We were so excited last year to have gotten the TVA's permission to come off the island and shoot the fireworks form the Dam site, only to have our enthusiasm dampened by the worst weather we have had since we began organizing the celebration," said Gary Slagle, who stages the event each year along with his wife Kathy and the rest of the volunteers who make up the Fireworks Committee.

"We were ultimately able to launch, but the rain did cut last year's display short," Slagle said. "After five straight years with some sort of weather challenge, including a hail storm in 2003 that took down our stage and sent one of our two bands packing, we are due for a break."

The Fireworks Committee wishes to thank all those who are sponsoring and helping to fund this year's Celebration, including the following Gold Sponsors: Baumgarten Cement, Mountain Building Supply, Signs Fast, SilverScript Insurance Company, Smith Power Sports, Harrison Construction and Vertical Blind Outlet.

"While we are grateful for the support of these and several other great partners, we are still a little short of fully funding this year's event," Slagle said. "So anyone who still wants to contribute, please send donations to P.O. Box 892, Hayesville."

The Committee could also use some additional help to setup, breakdown and clean-up the event site this year, so anyone interested in volunteering should call (828) 389-4814.

The Fireworks Committee hopes everyone will come out and celebrate our community, our country and the freedom we hold so dear.
