Upcoming ICL seminars offered in July

Learn about Ekphrastic Poems: Ekphrastic poems are inspired by works of visual art. Louisa Franklin, Vice President for Administration at Young Harris College and former Academic Dean, will lead a discussion about the intersection of the visual and written arts. The class will meet for two hours on Tuesday, July 10 and Thursday, July 12, beginning at 10 am, in room 104 in the Goolsby Building on the campus of the College. Beginning with the Greeks and poetic descriptions of the shields of heroes, ekphrastic poems have been written by virtually every generation of bards. Perhaps the most famous, "Musee des Beaux Arts," written by W. H. Auden, describes the tale of the fall of Icarus in the painting by Breughel. The class will look at, listen to and discuss this unique topic in poetry. It is sponsored by the Institute for Continuing Learning at Young Harris College. The cost is $11 and membership in ICL is not required. Leave a voice mail message at 706- 379-5194 if you require additional information.

U.S. Immigration Law: Eileen Scofield, head of a 13-person immigration practice in Atlanta, will provide a brief history of U.S. immigration law as well as an overview of its current state. A Fuller E. Calloway graduate of the University of Georgia Law School, Ms. Scofield has developed over the last 22 years a national and international immigration practice. She coordinates the international relocation of corporate personnel and professional executives and guides employers with regard to employment verification rules and regulations. Her group of clients includes UPS, Duke Energy, New York Mets, AFLAC, SunTrust, Ritz Carlton Hotel, and other businesses and individuals. Ms. Scofield's seminar will provide a better understanding of some of the procedures and options available for individuals to legally enter and reside in the U.S. as well as some of the economic, political and social forces that result in the illegal entry. Without being overly technical, she will provide a general understanding of U.S. immigration philosophy and those facts that have given rise to the current immigration debate and proposed legislation. The seminar is sponsored by the Institute for Continuing Learning at Young Harris College. There is no cost and membership in ICL is not required. Leave a voice mail message at 706-379-5194 if you require additional information.
