Pranks cause close call at reservoir
HARRISON KEELY, Sentinel Writer

As the ever-reliable heat of summer reminds many, Chatuge Lake is not too far away to enjoy. But safety is always something to keep in mind, especially at the lake.

"It was just total disregard for safety and other people's lives," said Clay County resident Darlene DeVore, who recently witnessed a close call at the lake.

According to DeVore, three boys were kayaking at the lake Thursday afternoon when a boat with approximately nine teenagers rushed through the area, pulling a water skier who weaved in and out among the kayakers.

"I saw one turn over. He leaned, trying to avoid the skier, as he leaned the kayak the wake caught him and flipped it upside down. He just didn't come up with it," DeVore said. "It was too long. That kid was just down too long." She said she walked from her car to the lake before he came back up so she dialed 911.

DeVore said she believed the boaters knew the boys kayaking and were "just horsing around." She criticized them because they were waving and laughing throughout the ordeal. "None of them had lifejackets, even the skier. There was nothing," she said.

There were also other swimmers in the water at the time and DeVore said that the boat came too close for comfort. "They knew there were people over here swimming," she said. "They could see them."

Clay County Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene moments after the call, and found that there were no injuries sustained from the incident.

DeVore, who stated that she doesn't normally come to the lake, spoke afterward with John Ashe of Clay County Fire and Rescue. "I don't want us to be dragging the lake for any kids this year," she told him.
