H.H.S. student tests career choices at workshop

A select group of North Carolina high school students were at N.C. State University, June 24-29. Approximately 100 Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) sponsor and send one or two high school students. Clay County SWCD was proud to sponsor Sara Adams, a senior at Hayesville High School, to represent Clay County.

She was one of the seventy eight students selected this year for the 43rd Annual Resource Conservation Workshop. Students were chosen based on their academic achievements and interest in pursuing a career in natural resource management or related field. Instructors come from the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources and other conservation organizations. Lessons of environmental conservation and competing for a chance to win a college scholarship or cash awards are some of the benefits of this workshop.

The annual workshop offers an intensive study of conservation practices and hands-on training. The training involves several field trips and many fun and educational activities. Students gain knowledge in soil and water conservation, forestry, wildlife and fisheries management. The scholarship and cash awards are provided based on the scores on an exam at the end of the week. Sara was chosen as one of the eight finalists for the leadership skills she demonstrated during the course.

The workshop sponsors include Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District, the NC Division of Soil & Water Conservation, NC Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts, Soil Science Department of NC State University, Hugh Hammond Bennett Chapter of the Soil & Water Conservation Society of America and the NC Soil & Water Conservation Commission.

For more information, contact Leanna Staton, Educational Coordinator with the Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District, at (828) 389-9764.
