"We gave a scholarship to the high school and they chose a student who had chosen a career in the medical field, whether it's nursing, CNA, doctoring, dentistry, anything. It's [for] any student interested in the medical field at all. We're supporting and encouraging that education path," William Deitz, administrator of Hayesville House, said.
The high school, in turn, chose Rogers, who was highly recommended by Dorcas Brooks, the school's health occupations teacher.
"She's an excellent student and we have confidencethat she will be in the medical field in a few short years," guidance counselor Karen Nicholson said. "She's probably one of the top allied health science students."
Planning to pursue a career as a dental hygienist, Rogers will complete her core courses at Tri-County Community College before transferring ti Asheville Buncombe Technical College.
"I was always interested in [dental hygiene]," Rogers said. After two years in the health program at HHS, she said she really enjoyed the field experience of shadowing.
Deitz said that the public grand opening of Hayesville House will take place August 19, while members of the Chamber of Commerce will visit on August 16.
"It's for elderly or anyone needing some assistance, but we're not a nursing home," he said, adding that the home is licensed only for minimal assistance. "We've got a dining room and we've got a living room with a baby grand piano coming. We've got a library, a spa and a beauty shop and it's a really nice building."
