Yellow Jacket football takes first steps of new season

HAYESVILLE - The 2007 Hayesville High Football Team started investing Monday in a little "sweat equity," working out for the first time as a team in preparation for the upcoming season.

The Yellow Jackets ran warmups, agility drills and conditioning exercises on Monday at the Jacket practice field. Mother Nature cooperated by keeping area thunderstorms at bay, although thunder threatened from time to time.

High humidity forced numerous breaks for water throughout the practice and some players had a tough time adjusting to the conditions.

They won't have a lot of time to turn that around.

The Yellow Jackets take to the field Aug. 10 at Western Carolina University for the annual Mountain Clash V scrimmage.

The following week, they travel to Franklin for the Endowment game.

Then the real work starts.

Copper Basin, Tenn., opens Hayesville's home season on Aug. 24. The Jackets then travel to Smoky Mountain on Aug. 31.

Hayesville hosts Rabun County, Ga., on Sept. 7 and travels to Towns County, Ga., the following Friday. The reigning Smoky Mountain Conference champs, Cherokee, come to Frank Long Stadium on Sept. 21, but the Yellow Jackets follow that with a long road trip to Rosman to take on the Tigers.

Returning players from last year's squad will be sure to think "payback" when the Swain County Maroon Devils come to Hayesville Oct. 5.

After a weekend off, the Yellow Jackets return to action Oct. 19, when they head to Robbinsville to take on the Black Knights. And the Jackets wrap up their regular season schedule Nov. 2 with a home game against Andrews.

Game time for all contests is 7:30 p.m.
